这首小令，是作者侍从康熙帝出塞之作。

表面是吊古，但有伤今之意，刚健中含婀娜。

说从前幽怨，也不是很古的从前，铁马金戈，青冢黄昏，隐约透示着满清入关以前各族间的战事痕迹。

满目荒凉谁可语？

西风吹老丹枫树。

从前幽怨应无数。

铁马金戈，青冢黄昏路。

一往情深深几许？

深山夕照深秋雨。
