此诗写连雨独饮的体会，诗人在饮酒中议论人生哲理。

诗人坚信自然界的规律是有生必有死，世间并无长生久视的神仙，人应该听任自然，顺应自然的发展规律。

诗中既表现了诗人对人生的达观态度，也表现了诗人愿独守“任真”的信念。

全诗重在议论哲理、自我解脱，几次使用问句，造成语意转折，语气变化，又能前后映衬，扣紧开端的论题，发人深省，余味无穷，显示了陶渊明哲理诗的特色。
