from the northern provincial capital of Kunduz and crashed somewhere near the 12,700-foot Salang Pass, a major thoroughfare connecting Kabul with Afghanistan's north.

The crash appears to be the worst in Afghanistan since 2005, when another domestic carrier, Kam Air, crashed in the mountains east of Kabul, killing all 104 passengers and crew on board.

Bad weather contributed to that crash, and aviation officials said the crew may have been trying to save on fuel by flying through a blinding snowstorm.
